Healing With Turmeric

Scientific studies are being made to qualify Turmeric as a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent, useful in disinfecting cuts and burns.

Turmeric has long been used by the Chinese and Indian cultures for medicine. Traditionally called "Indian saffron" because of its deep yellow-orange color and has been used throughout history as a condiment, and as a textile dye.
In Mesopotamia, clay tablets inscribed around 650 B.C. describe turmeric as a brewing spice, stomach tonic and dye plant.
In 1280, Marco Polo encountered a widely used, saffron-colored food seasoning that was most likely turmeric and brought it back to Europe.

Use in Cooking!

Turmeric's strong flavor, advise using sparingly to start.

Turmeric is an important ingredient in curry mixes, chutney, and mustard pickles. It also goes well with chicken, duck, turkey, vegetables, rice, and salad dressing. It is extremely pungent, and actually gets stronger when cooked. A little goes a long way, so use it sparingly when experimenting.
Try this healing tea:
Ginger and turmeric combine with citrus and maple syrup to make this detoxifying ginger-turmeric tea
INGREDIENTS
2 cups water
1/2 teaspoon powdered ginger
1/2 teaspoon powdered turmeric
1 tablespoon maple syrup
Juice of 1/2 lemon
1. Bring water to a boil, then add powdered herbs. Simmer for 10 minutes.
2. Strain tea into a mug, add maple syrup and lemon, stirring to combine. Drink warm.
Makes 1 serving.

Turmeric Rice! It's so Nice!

Side dish to savor--love the flavor

Indian turmeric has been known to the world since anient times. Several unique properties of Indian turmeric make it the ideal choice as a food flavor and effective ingredient in medicines.
TURMERIC RICE
2 tbsp. butter
2 tbsp. chopped onions
1/2 tsp. minced garlic
1 c. converted rice
1 tbsp. turmeric
1 1/2 c. chicken broth
1 bay leaf
2 sprigs thyme or 1/2 tsp. dry
Salt & pepper to taste
Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a saucepan and add the onion and garlic. Cook until wilted. Add the rice and turmeric, stir to coat. Add the broth, bay leaf, thyme, salt and pepper. Cover and bring to a boil. Simmer and cook for 17 minutes. Uncover and stir in the remaining butter. Toss gently to blend well. Remove bay leaf. Yield: 4 servings
